Action, RIO, outcomes… I am regularly asked how I lead my foresight work towards actionable outcomes. There is the ideal answer, and then there’s the real answer. Let me begin with the ideal answer. In an ideal world, everyone you’re working with is bought into foresight. From the CEO all the way through the executive leadership team and into managers. In an ideal world, the call to action comes from the CEO or the executive lead of the business group or function where the foresight work sits. If the work cuts across the company having CEO by-in is a critical piece of building towards action. If the work sits within a particular business group or function the executive lead of that business group can sanction it. Whoever is running the futures work needs resources and the ability to shift people’s day jobs to focus on new actions when appropriate.
